Pennsy Supply, Inc. Wins Featured Project Award
Supplier for $32 million dollar Market Square project

HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 28, 2005) - Pennsy Supply, Inc. has been awarded the Featured Project Award from the Expanded Shale, Clay and Slate Institute (ESCSI) for its participation in the recently constructed 18-story Market Square Plaza in downtown Harrisburg. ESCSI is known for encouraging the use of rotary kiln-produced lightweight aggregate.
In receiving this award, Randy Lake, President of the Mid-Atlantic Group, which encompasses Pennsy Supply said, “This project was a true test of our commitment to ‘quality service’ – the demands of this job were anything but routine. We can all be proud that Pennsy has again risen to the challenge and exceeded customers’ expectations.”
Pennsy Supply was awarded the Featured Project Award for the use of lightweight stone aggregate in the construction of the new $32 million Market Square Plaza on Second Street in downtown Harrisburg. The use of lightweight aggregate allowed designers to overcome challenges such as dead load and difficult terrain, to work within the small 20 x 100 limited staging area in front of the Second Street building. Expanded shale, clay and slate have proven successful in various situations such as high-rise buildings and concrete decks, two obstacles overcome in the Market Street Plaza project.
In preparation for the project, Pennsy Supply built a large off-site saturation pond to properly soak the lightweight aggregate before use. Generally, lightweight aggregate for structural lightweight concrete is sprinklered for three days. However, Pennsy Supply used the pond so concrete could be saturated quickly and placed on a round-the-clock basis. Pennsy Supply’s efficient production of the aggregate assured that materials were provided on time for the aggressive project schedule.
